(Basically the equivalent of coasting a manual in 5th, then pushing the clutch in and shifting to first as you stop). WebThen, the fake “gears” were short l, so it would shift often. I appreciated that, but the throttle response was too laggy in normal, so I did not drive in that mode often. My cousin has a 2010 Maxima and it does not fake shift.

With smooth operation, one pair of pulleys moves closer together while the other moves further apart. Constant tension is placed on the belt, so slippage is controlled and minimized. With the different driving modes, you can pick between a "normal" CVT operation or the "stepped" programmed shift modes. To me, this would have been a good feature to include in the Ascent, but was likely not implemented due to cost and complexity.

The purpose of a CVT is to keep the engine in it's most efficient RPM as much as possible to achieve the best fuel economy.
